The djembe is quickly becoming one of the most ubiquitous drums in the world. It's now wonder, with its rich history, incredible voice and talented master djembefolas spreading it's magic all over the globe.
The djembe is so popular that the demand has created an industy. Countries with little or no history of djembe making are now producing djembe drums to fill the demand. This iconic drum is traditionally made by hand with painstaking care. The craft is passed on from generation to generation in certain West African countries.
Today they are mass produced in African countries that do not have a djembe culture. They're made in Indonesia. Many of these drums are commonly called "tourist" drums and are often poorly made in terms of materials and craftsmanship. These djembes are poorly tuned and not made to last. Soon they begin to fall apart.
